The village of Bronte comes alive in the summer as both residents and tourists make their way down to enjoy the scenic views of Lake Ontario and Bronte Harbour. As early as the turn of the century, the Civic holiday has been a time for the citizens of Bronte to celebrate their village.
Our drive continues amidst beautiful scenery into the County of Lancashire. Following in the footsteps of Charlotte Bronte, our next stop is at the tiny village of Wycoller with its ruinous hall, the model for Ferndean Manor in Jane Eyre. The village is full of character and atmosphere with two ancient bridges and a ford crossing Wycoller Beck.

Our favourite pub was the Haworth Steam Brewery which is situated on top of the main street in the centre of the village.
After the local decline of the wheat industry in 1887, the citizens of Bronte turned to commercial fishing. By the turn of the century Bronte harbour had 22 fishing vessels (more than Port Credit and Burlington Beach). At this time the steam mill, under new ownership, began fabricating metal products, transforming itself into a stamp mill.

The Bronte Steam Mills were built by the company, Jones, Williams, and Cummer on the west side of Trafalgar Street between Triller Street and Chisholm Street. At that time, it was one of the largest steam grist mills in Ontario. A threestorey building with a tall, brick smokestack, the steam grist mill was a Bronte landmark for nearly a century.

Haworth (/ ˈ h aʊ. ər θ /) is a village in City of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, in the Pennines 3 miles (5 km) southwest of Keighley, 10 miles (16 km) west of Bradford and 10 miles (16 km) east of Colne in Lancashire. The surrounding areas include Oakworth and Oxenhope. Nearby villages include Cross Roads, Stanbury and Lumbfoot.
For a bit of trivia, the line was extended to Haworth after a civil engineer visited the village to pay his respects to Charlotte Brontë but discovered there was no railway. There''s surely no more romantic way to travel the moorland of Brontë Country than in a steamdrawn carriage.
Haworth is small enough to get about on foot, but there are a number of steep bits and lots of cobbles. If you are coming from the Steam Railway, there is a hill up into the Bronte Village which is fairly steep and cobbled in places.

As freight carries changed to steam operations, Bronte harbour had to be ready to supply large piles of firewood to the boilers. As the industrial aspect of the harbour prospered, so did the recreational and residential.
Bronte Steam Mill was built in 1858, two years after the completion of the harbour. The mill was located on the westside (water side) of Bronte Rd. With solid brick walls and a 4'' thick stone foundation the mill was a very sturdy mill was always powered by steam, never water.
